Iran Captain Accuses FIFA of Wanting Team Eliminated from World Cup
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi has launched a strong criticism of FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, claiming that his team feels tournament organisers would rather see Iran eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup than progress to the knockout stages.Taremi made the remarks after Iran’s dramatic 1-1 draw against Egypt in their final Group G match. The result left the Asian side waiting for results elsewhere to determine whether they would qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Expressing frustration over the team’s experience throughout the tournament, Taremi described the competition as a “disaster” for Iran, citing a series of logistical and administrative challenges that he believes have placed the squad at a significant disadvantage. According to him, the team has repeatedly faced travel difficulties, while several members of its support staff were unable to obtain visas, limiting the assistance available to the players.The Iranian captain revealed that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had visited the team’s dressing room earlier in the tournament and assured them that their concerns would be addressed. However, Taremi claimed that little changed afterward, saying the squad continued to encounter the same problems throughout the group stage.
Among the issues highlighted by the striker was Iran’s repeated travel between its training base in Tijuana, Mexico, and match venues in the United States. He argued that the constant travel affected the players’ preparation and recovery, adding that the absence of key logistics and recovery staff made the situation even more difficult.Taremi also suggested that, from the team’s perspective, it appeared as though FIFA and tournament organisers wanted Iran out of the competition.
