Mr Ibu’s Family Receives ₦7.5 Million in Donations After Widow’s Public Appeal
The family of late Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has received ₦7.5 million in public donations following an emotional appeal by his widow, Stella Okafor, over the financial hardship facing the family.The donations came after a video surfaced online in which Stella revealed that the family had been struggling to meet basic needs since the actor’s death. She disclosed that they had been unable to pay their house rent, settle the children’s school fees, or keep up with electricity bills, adding that the children had been sent home from school due to unpaid fees.Content creator King Mitchy, who shared the family’s story on social media, later announced that generous Nigerians had contributed a total of ₦7.5 million to support the widow and her children. She expressed appreciation to everyone who donated, describing the response as a demonstration of compassion and kindness.
According to King Mitchy, the funds will be used to settle the children’s outstanding school fees, including the eldest daughter’s WAEC registration, pay the family’s rent and assist them in relocating to a more affordable apartment. She explained that after speaking extensively with the widow, she believed moving to a less expensive residence would help improve the family’s financial situation.The appeal has generated widespread reactions across social media, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy for the family and commending those who contributed to the fundraising effort. Others described the donations as a reflection of the love and admiration many people still have for the late actor, whose comedy brought joy to millions during his lifetime.
However, the fundraising also sparked controversy after some members of Mr Ibu’s extended family questioned the family’s financial situation and made allegations regarding the management of the late actor’s estate. Mr Ibu passed away in March 2024 after battling a prolonged illness that led to the amputation of one of his legs.
