ICPC Accuses El-Rufai of Breaching Court-Approved Medical Visit, Arrests Personal Doctor
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of violating the conditions of a court-approved medical visit while in the commission’s custody.In a statement issued on Tuesday, the anti-corruption agency said El-Rufai was granted permission to receive medical attention in compliance with a Kaduna State High Court order and its obligation to safeguard the welfare of persons in custody. However, the commission alleged that the visit was used for purposes beyond what the court had approved.The ICPC further announced the arrest of El-Rufai’s personal physician, Professor Bello Abubakar, alleging that he made false statements in connection with the medical visit. The commission said the doctor’s actions are now part of its ongoing investigation.
According to the commission, El-Rufai failed to appear before the Kaduna State High Court on the first day of his scheduled trial after requesting to see his personal doctor. The court has since adjourned the case to July 15, 2026, to hear pending applications, including a request by the former governor seeking the trial judge’s recusal.The ICPC said it intends to bring the alleged breach of the court-approved medical visit to the attention of the court. It maintained that its officers acted professionally throughout the hospital visit and remained committed to complying with all court directives while ensuring lawful custody of the defendant.
As of the time of filing this report, El-Rufai had not publicly responded to the latest allegations. The matter is expected to feature in the ongoing court proceedings as investigations continue.
