Borno Subsidises Fertiliser by 50%, Distributes Free Farm Inputs to 120,000 Farmers
The Borno State Government has launched a major agricultural support programme, subsidising the cost of fertiliser by 50 per cent and distributing free farm inputs to 120,000 farmers across the state.The initiative is aimed at boosting food production, improving farmers’ productivity and strengthening food security as preparations for the 2026 farming season gather momentum.
Speaking during the flag-off of the programme, Governor Babagana Zulum said the intervention forms part of the state’s broader strategy to support farmers, increase agricultural output and enhance the livelihoods of rural communities affected by years of insecurity.Under the scheme, farmers will receive fertiliser at half of the prevailing market price, while selected beneficiaries will also be provided with free farm inputs, including improved seeds and other essential agricultural materials needed for cultivation.
According to the state government, the programme targets 120,000 farmers drawn from different local government areas, with priority given to smallholder farmers who form the backbone of agricultural production in the state.Governor Zulum said the intervention is expected to reduce production costs for farmers, encourage increased cultivation and contribute to stabilising food prices through higher agricultural yields.The government also urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the inputs and avoid diverting or selling them, stressing that the programme is designed to improve food availability, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activities in rural communities.
Agriculture remains one of the key pillars of Borno State’s economic recovery agenda, with the government continuing to invest in farming support programmes despite security challenges in parts of the state.Stakeholders in the agricultural sector have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that could improve productivity and strengthen resilience among farmers ahead of the planting season.The fertiliser subsidy and free input distribution are expected to complement other ongoing agricultural development programmes aimed at restoring livelihoods, promoting rural development and ensuring sustainable food production across Borno State.
