Stakeholders Highlight AI’s Growing Impact on Nigeria’s Telecom Industry
Industry stakeholders have underscored the growing importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, describing the technology as a key driver of innovation, efficiency and sustainable growth. The discussions took place during the West Africa Telecoms Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition (WATISE 4.0), where telecommunications operators, technology experts, regulators and policymakers examined the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in the sector.
Participants noted that AI is already helping telecom companies improve network performance by predicting equipment failures, reducing service disruptions and optimizing the allocation of network resources. They said the technology is enabling operators to deliver faster, more reliable and higher-quality services to millions of subscribers.
Stakeholders also highlighted AI’s growing role in customer service. Many telecom companies are deploying AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants to respond to customer enquiries, resolve complaints more quickly and provide personalized support around the clock.Cybersecurity was another major focus of the summit. Experts explained that AI is increasingly being used to detect suspicious activities, prevent fraud and strengthen the security of telecommunications networks against cyber threats. They stressed that as digital services continue to expand, AI will play a critical role in protecting sensitive customer information and ensuring business continuity. While acknowledging the benefits of AI, speakers emphasized the need for responsible adoption. They called for stronger investment in digital infrastructure, data protection, workforce development and policies that encourage innovation while safeguarding consumer rights.
Industry leaders also urged greater collaboration between government agencies, telecom operators, educational institutions and technology companies to build the skills needed for an AI-driven economy. They noted that developing local talent would help Nigeria maximize the economic opportunities created by emerging technologies.
Analysts believe the integration of AI into Nigeria’s telecom sector could improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, expand digital services and accelerate the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries around the world, stakeholders agreed that Nigeria’s telecommunications sector must embrace innovation to remain competitive and meet the growing demands of businesses and consumers.
