TCN Announces Temporary Power Disruption Across Five Northern States, Parts of Niger Republic
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a temporary electricity disruption that will affect parts of Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and Yobe states, as well as the town of Gazaoua in the Republic of Niger, due to scheduled maintenance work on its transmission infrastructure.
In a statement issued by the company’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN explained that the planned outage is necessary to allow engineers to continue the ongoing upgrade of the 330kV Bus II jumpers at the Kumbotso 330kV Transmission Substation in Kano. The project also involves replacing existing 350mm² conductors with larger 800mm² conductors to strengthen the transmission network and improve the reliability of electricity supply.
According to the company, the maintenance exercise is scheduled to take place between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, during which electricity distribution to the affected areas will be temporarily interrupted. TCN noted that the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) will be unable to receive bulk power from the national grid throughout the maintenance period, resulting in service disruptions for customers within its franchise areas.The company emphasized that although the temporary outage may cause inconvenience to residents and businesses, the upgrade forms part of broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure. Officials said the replacement of aging conductors with higher-capacity equipment is expected to enhance the stability of the national grid, reduce system constraints and improve electricity delivery to consumers across the affected region.The planned disruption will affect electricity consumers in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, as well as several communities in Bauchi and Yobe states. In addition, residents of Gazaoua in neighbouring Niger Republic, which receives electricity through Nigeria’s transmission network, will also experience a temporary interruption in power supply.
TCN appealed to residents, commercial establishments and industrial consumers in the affected areas to make adequate preparations ahead of the maintenance exercise. The company assured customers that normal electricity supply would be restored immediately after the work is completed and all necessary safety and operational checks have been carried out.The latest maintenance programme is part of TCN’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s transmission network and improve the efficiency of power delivery. Authorities have maintained that continuous investment in critical transmission infrastructure remains essential to meeting the growing electricity demand across Nigeria while ensuring a more stable and reliable power supply for consumers.
While acknowledging the inconvenience the temporary outage may cause, the company expressed confidence that the long-term benefits of the upgrade would outweigh the short-term disruption. TCN also apologized to affected customers and thanked them for their patience and understanding as work continues to improve the nation’s electricity transmission system.
