FG Approves Recruitment of 1,200 Staff for Newly Established Ondo Teaching Hospital
The Federal Government has approved the recruitment of 1,200 clinical and administrative personnel for the newly established Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) in Ondo State as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and medical education in the country.The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Olusegun Ojo, disclosed the development while briefing journalists on the institution’s transition to a federal teaching hospital.
According to him, more than 800 of the approved staff members have already completed the first phase of biometric enrolment under the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), while a mop-up exercise is being conducted for those who were unable to participate in the initial exercise due to technical challenges.
Prof. Ojo said the newly recruited workforce comprises both clinical and administrative personnel who will support the smooth take-off and day-to-day operations of the hospital.He explained that although the hospital had initially hoped to commence salary payments in July, delays in completing the biometric verification process shifted the timeline. Staff are now expected to begin receiving their salaries through the IPPIS platform by the end of August 2026.The CMD noted that the hospital has also begun attracting experienced doctors, nurses, surgeons and other healthcare professionals from across Nigeria to strengthen its workforce and improve the quality of medical services.
He, however, identified inadequate office accommodation, limited clinical space and insufficient medical equipment as some of the major challenges facing the institution. He expressed confidence that the Federal Government’s take-off grant and other planned interventions would address these challenges.The Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital was created following the transition of the former University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital into a federal institution to serve as the teaching hospital for the Federal University of Technology Akure.
Stakeholders have welcomed the recruitment approval, describing it as a significant step toward improving access to quality healthcare, expanding medical training opportunities and creating employment for healthcare professionals.The Federal Government is expected to continue supporting the institution with infrastructure, equipment and manpower as it develops into a full-fledged tertiary healthcare centre serving Ondo State and neighbouring communities.
