Governor Adeleke Seeks Visa Restrictions on APC Leaders Over Alleged Political Violence in Osun
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called for visa restrictions and economic sanctions against some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging their involvement in political violence ahead of the state’s governorship election.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement on election security, Adeleke urged the international community to take action against politicians found to be sponsoring violence or undermining Nigeria’s democratic process. He argued that individuals linked to election-related violence should face consequences beyond Nigeria’s borders.The governor specifically mentioned several APC leaders, including the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, alleging that their actions and public statements had contributed to rising political tensions in Osun State.
Adeleke also appealed to security agencies to investigate all reported incidents of political violence and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, regardless of their political affiliation.The call comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the Osun governorship election, with concerns growing over reports of clashes between supporters of rival political parties.
In response, the APC rejected the allegations, insisting that its members were not responsible for the violence. The party accused the governor of attempting to politicise security issues and called for an impartial investigation into all reported incidents.Political observers have urged all parties to embrace issue-based campaigns and avoid inflammatory rhetoric capable of escalating tensions. Civil society groups have also appealed to political leaders to promote peaceful participation and respect the rule of law throughout the election period.Security agencies have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order before, during and after the election, assuring residents that adequate measures are in place to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
As campaigning continues, stakeholders have stressed the importance of dialogue, restraint and respect for democratic principles to safeguard peace in Osun State.
