
AI Boom Raises Environmental Concerns as Google and Amazon Report Higher Carbon Emissions
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is increasing pressure on major technology companies’ environmental commitments, with new sustainability reports from Google and Amazon showing significant rises in carbon emissions linked to growing AI infrastructure.Both companies recently released updated sustainability reports highlighting the environmental challenges associated with the global AI race. Manufacturing these facilities and the specialised hardware that powers AI systems generates substantial indirect, or “Scope 3,” greenhouse gas emissions.The findings have raised concerns about whether major technology companies can meet their climate commitments while simultaneously investing billions of dollars in AI development. Google and Amazon have pledged to eliminate or significantly reduce their carbon footprints over the coming years, but analysts say achieving those goals will require greater investment in renewable energy, low-carbon construction materials and carbon-removal technologies.
Despite the environmental challenges, both companies maintain that artificial intelligence can also play a positive role in tackling climate change by improving energy efficiency, enhancing weather forecasting and supporting scientific research. However, experts argue that the environmental cost of building and operating large AI systems must also be carefully managed.
