Joash Amupitan, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says the commission has completed 10 of the 14 activities on its timetable for the 2027 general election.
Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the flag-off of a nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign for the 2027 general election organised by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Amupitan said INEC had completed the 10 activities in line with the statutory deadlines and operational benchmarks.
“To manage an enterprise of this magnitude, the commission operated under the legal framework established by the electoral Act of 2026 and published timetable schedule of activities,” he said,
“I am pleased to announce that, out of the 14 disputed activities provided in our timetable. The commission has successfully executed 10 major milestones, strictly adhering to legal deadlines and operational benchmarks. Some of the timelines were breached by the parliament.”
The INEC chairman said the commission had digitised the nomination of candidates by political parties through its candidate nomination portal to ensure that the names submitted to the commission matched the outcomes of party primaries.
He said the portal had processed nominations for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, as well as candidates for the national assembly, governorship and state houses of assembly.
According to Amupitan, the commission had also begun physical assessments of its facilities, storage infrastructure, power arrangements and personnel across the country’s geopolitical zones.
He said the commission was strengthening its logistics arrangements to ensure the timely distribution of election materials and the early commencement of voting.
He said the INEC had secured the procurement of additional bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) machines and was upgrading its cybersecurity infrastructure to protect its networks and data transmission channels against cyber threats.
Amupitan said the commission was working with security agencies to protect voters, officials and materials during the polls.
Lanre Issa-Onilu, director-general of NOA, said the agency would deploy its community orientation and mobilisation officers across the 774 LGAs to mobilise voters ahead of the general election.
Issa-Onilu said the campaign would focus on discouraging voter apathy, vote buying and electoral violence through community dialogues, radio programmes, local-language communication and digital platforms.
He said the agency would work with the INEC, security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations (CSOs) and community leaders to promote peaceful participation and disseminate verified electoral information.
