A prominent Islamic scholar in Ekiti State, Sheikh Zubair Yahyi Akorede, has called on Yoruba leaders, traditional rulers and other critical stakeholders across the South-West to take proactive steps towards addressing the worsening insecurity confronting the region and the country at large.
The respected cleric made the call while hosting members of the Muslim Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MMPN) in Ekiti State ahead of the forthcoming Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
Sheikh Akorede, who is also the Balogun Oniwaasi of Ekiti State, expressed concern over the increasing cases of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other violent crimes, stressing that urgent collective action had become necessary to safeguard lives and property.
He urged traditional institutions, community leaders and other influential stakeholders in Yorubaland to unite and evolve practical solutions capable of restoring peace and stability, noting that insecurity had continued to threaten socio-economic activities and national development.
According to him, sincere prayers and coordinated community efforts remain essential tools in overcoming the nation’s current security challenges.
The Islamic cleric also appealed to Nigerians to remain vigilant and security conscious, especially during the festive period, while calling on citizens to continually seek divine intervention for peace, unity and progress in the country.
Speaking on the significance of Eid-ul-Adha, Sheikh Akorede urged Muslim faithful to emulate the virtues of Prophet Ibrahim through total obedience to Almighty Allah, sacrifice, faith and compassion towards humanity.
He described the festival as a period for sober reflection, renewed commitment to righteousness and peaceful coexistence among people of different backgrounds.
The cleric further advised commercial and private drivers travelling during the celebration to exercise patience, professionalism and caution on the highways to avoid road crashes and unnecessary loss of lives.
He particularly warned against night travelling, noting that many fatal accidents and security threats often occur during late hours.
Akorede also commended the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, for what he described as his support for the Muslim community and inclusive style of governance, urging him to sustain the cordial relationship with religious groups in the state.
He assured the governor of continued prayers for the success of his administration and the peaceful development of Ekiti State.
The Islamic scholar equally offered prayers for the President-General of the League of Imams and Alfas in the South-West, Edo and Delta States, Sheikh Jamiu Bello Kewulere, as well as the entire Muslim Ummah, wishing them a peaceful and spiritually rewarding Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
