Meta to Begin Production of In-House AI Chip in September
Meta Platforms plans to begin production of its first in-house artificial intelligence chip, codenamed “Iris,” in September as the company pushes to expand its AI computing capacity.The custom chip is designed to reduce Meta’s dependence on external suppliers while improving the efficiency of AI systems powering services across Facebook, Instagram and other platforms.The project is part of Meta’s broader strategy to double its computing capacity by 2027 as it continues investing billions of dollars in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company is working with Broadcom on chip design and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) on production.
Meta expects the new chip to play a key role in supporting future AI models and services while helping lower long-term infrastructure costs.
