Nigeria to Investigate Major Tech Firms Over News Content Use
The Federal Government has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major global technology companies over allegations of anti-competitive practices and the unauthorised use of news content.
The inquiry follows complaints from the Nigerian Press Organisation, which represents newspaper owners, journalists’ unions, broadcasters and online publishers. The media groups allege that global technology platforms have benefited from Nigerian news content without adequate compensation.
The investigation will examine the activities of companies including Meta, Alphabet, X and generative artificial intelligence platforms operating in Nigeria. Authorities say the probe is intended to ensure fair competition and protect the rights of local media organisations.
The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for the relationship between digital platforms and news publishers in Nigeria, particularly as the use of artificial intelligence and online content distribution continues to expand.
