Putin Claims NATO Is Preparing for War With Russia
Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused NATO of preparing for a potential military confrontation with Russia, saying the alliance’s recent actions and increased defence spending indicate preparations for war.
Putin made the remarks ahead of the upcoming NATO summit, where leaders are expected to discuss strengthening the alliance’s military capabilities, increasing defence budgets and reinforcing support for Ukraine. His comments come amid heightened tensions between Moscow and the Western military alliance.
According to Putin, NATO’s expansion and military activities near Russia’s borders are being used to justify what he described as an anti-Russian agenda. He argued that the alliance is escalating tensions under the pretext of defending its member states, while insisting that Russia does not seek conflict with Europe.
NATO has consistently maintained that its military posture is defensive and aimed at deterring potential aggression. Alliance officials have repeatedly described Russia as the most significant and direct threat to Euro-Atlantic security following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.The latest exchange of rhetoric comes as NATO members prepare to discuss higher defence spending targets and enhanced military readiness during their summit. Several member states have also announced plans to strengthen their armed forces and reinforce NATO’s eastern flank in response to security concerns stemming from the war in Ukraine.
Relations between Russia and NATO have remained at their lowest point in decades since the outbreak of the Ukraine war. Diplomatic ties have deteriorated sharply, with both sides accusing each other of actions that undermine regional stability and increase the risk of wider confrontation.
While Putin’s remarks reflect Moscow’s position, NATO has not indicated that it is preparing to launch a war against Russia, maintaining that its military measures are intended to protect member states and deter potential threats.
