President Bola Tinubu has declared that his administration will not award government contracts based on political patronage, insisting that competence, quality and proven performance will remain the key criteria for securing public projects.
The President said contractors who deliver projects to specification and within the agreed timeline would be considered for additional assignments, while those who fail to meet expectations would not be engaged by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration.
Tinubu, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, made the remarks on Thursday during the commissioning of the rehabilitated 16-kilometre Old Keffi Road linking Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi and Dei-Dei to the Outer Northern Expressway in Abuja.
He commended Lubrik Construction Company Limited for completing the road project to the required standard and within the stipulated timeframe, describing the performance as a model for contractors handling government projects.
“This government will not reward patronage; we will reward competence. If you deliver, you get more work. If you fail, you are out. That is the standard we have set under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
Tinubu said the era of awarding public contracts without accountability had ended, stressing that performance had become the defining benchmark of his administration.
According to him, Nigerians should judge leaders by visible projects rather than political rhetoric.
“We must raise the standard for elections in this country. Nigerians should simply ask every politician: ‘Show me your work and I will vote for you.
“Many people have remained in government for over two decades and cannot point to any enduring achievement. But President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has always been identified with performance from his days as Governor of Lagos till today”, he said.
The President described the commissioning of multiple projects across the country as evidence that his administration was fulfilling its campaign promises.
He recalled the inauguration of the ongoing road projects in Nasarawa State and other infrastructure executed within the first year of the administration.
Tinubu also commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, saying he had transformed Abuja into a massive construction site, with projects no longer abandoned.
He said Wike had demonstrated uncommon commitment by extending development beyond the city centre to satellite towns and Area Councils.
Tinubu said, “You have turned the Federal Capital Territory into a site of visible results. You inspect projects, you make decisions, and you follow through until completion.
“You have ensured that development is no longer limited to the city centre. Communities in the satellite towns and Area Councils are also benefiting from the dividends of democracy.
‘Mr. Project’ is no longer a slogan; it is now your record of performance”.
The President added that he had absolute confidence in the minister’s ability to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda in the nation’s capital.
“I trust you. I rely on you to keep this administration’s promises. Abuja is better today because you are the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,” he added.
