WhatsApp Set to Introduce Usernames for Enhanced Privacy
WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a long-awaited username feature that will allow users to connect with others without necessarily sharing their phone numbers, marking one of the platform’s most significant privacy updates in recent years.The new feature, which is currently under development, will enable users to create unique usernames linked to their WhatsApp accounts. Usernames must contain letters and numbers, cannot begin with “www,” and cannot end with a domain extension such as “.com” to prevent confusion with websites. WhatsApp is also expected to ensure that every username is unique, preventing duplication across the platform.When a user successfully creates a username, WhatsApp will reportedly display a confirmation animation, after which the username will become visible in chats instead of the person’s phone number when communicating with users who do not already have the number saved.The upcoming feature is expected to improve privacy, particularly for users who communicate with people outside their contact list, such as businesses, online communities and new acquaintances.
