The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), in partnership with a private organisation, has announced plans to reward seven outstanding Nigerian undergraduates with ₦5 million each in recognition of their academic excellence, leadership qualities and contributions to society.
The initiative is part of efforts to encourage students across the country’s tertiary institutions to pursue academic excellence while promoting innovation, integrity and community development. Organisers said the award is designed to motivate young Nigerians to remain committed to their educational and personal development despite prevailing challenges.
According to JAMB, the beneficiaries will be selected through a transparent process involving nominations, screening and evaluation. Eligible students are expected to demonstrate exceptional academic performance, exemplary character and active participation in activities that positively impact their institutions and communities. The Board explained that the programme reflects its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote quality education and reward merit. It noted that recognising exceptional students not only celebrates individual achievements but also inspires other undergraduates to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits.Officials of the partner organisation described education as one of the most effective tools for national development, adding that investing in outstanding students is an investment in Nigeria’s future. They expressed optimism that the scholarship awards would ease the financial burden on the beneficiaries and enable them to focus on their studies and future careers.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a positive step towards encouraging healthy academic competition among students in higher institutions. They also urged other corporate organisations and development partners to introduce similar programmes that reward excellence and provide opportunities for talented young Nigerians.
Students and youth groups have also praised the announcement, noting that financial support and recognition can significantly boost the morale of hardworking undergraduates. Many believe that such initiatives will encourage more students to remain focused on their education and contribute meaningfully to society.
JAMB reaffirmed its commitment to improving the quality of education in Nigeria through policies and partnerships that support students, institutions and the broader education sector. The Board added that it will continue to collaborate with organisations that share its vision of promoting academic excellence and human capital development.
The award ceremony is expected to hold after the completion of the selection process, with each of the seven successful undergraduates receiving ₦5 million.
